The 28-year-old Austrian player Dominic Thiem, former World No. 3 and winner of the US Open 2020, will play the AnyTech365 Andalucía Open 2022, which will take place from March 27th to April 3rd in the Puente Romano Beach Resort in Marbella, after receiving the last of the three tournament wild cards.
Almost nine months have passed since his last match on the ATP Tour, when at the Mallorca Championships last June he had to retire after barely playing seven games of the match, suffering pain in his right wrist that ended up being diagnosed as a muscle tear and that has kept him out of the competition ever since.
His greatest professional achievement came in September 2020, when he claimed victory at the US Open after a hard-fought five-set final against Alexander Zverev in more than four hours of match. He thus became the first player born in the nineties with a Grand Slam title, and the second Austrian with a 'Major' after Thomas Muster at Roland Garros 1995.
Dominic Thiem also has 16 more ATP Tour titles under his belt, including the Indian Wells Masters 1000 in 2019 and a runner-up finish at the 2020 ATP Finals. Despite having confessed on more than one time that playing on clay is where he feels more comfortable, has won at least one title on each of the surfaces.
Between the 2019 and 2020 seasons he signed a balance of 9 wins and 3 losses against Djokovic, Nadal and Federer, which made him, along with Andy Murray, the only player with at least 5 wins against each member of the 'Big 3'.
Tickets are already on sale from 20 euros on the official website of the tournament (www.andaluciaopen.com).
