The AnyTech365 Andalucía Open 2022 marks a milestone for the tournament by becoming a combined women's and men's event, Monday's day will go down in history as the first to feature matches from the WTA 125 draw. The clay of Puente Romano has seen the victory of the 8th top seed, the Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova against the Serbian Aleksandra Krunic; then, the center court has lived an exciting match between the German Anna-Lena Friedsam and Spanish Irene Burillo Escorihuela, the duel has fallen on the side of the Teutonic in three sets.
The other favorite playing this Monday, the Hungarian Panna Udvardy (6) also won against the Romanian Irina Bara, while the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto managed to impose her game against the Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova by 7-6(0) and 6-1.
The surprises came from two “wild cards”: the German Nastasja Schunk and Elina Avanesyan. The former defeated Poland's Katarzyna Kawa, while Avanesyan beat France's Fiona Ferro in three sets.
Two of the favorites in the men's main draw of the AnyTech365 Andalucía Open made their debuts on Monday with mixed fortunes. While the fourth seed, the Czech Jiri Vesely got his pass to the next round in a disputed match of more than two hours against Andrey Kuznetsov; the Italian Marco Cecchinato (7) gave in to the young promise of Asian tennis, Chun-hsin Tseng to close the day.
The Manolo Santana center court also saw the first match of the Spanish Mario Vilella Martinez, who was defeated in two sets (6-3; 6-0) by the German Yannick Hanfmann. The player from Elche could not repeat the good results obtained last year in the Andalusian tournament where he reached the semifinals and the round of 16 in the Challenger and ATP 250 editions respectively.
On the other hand, the German veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber managed to seal his pass to the next round in three sets, after coming from behind against the Czech Jiri Lehecka.
Lukas Klein, Raul Brancaccio, Alexander Shevchenko, Javier Barranco Cosano and Pol Martín Tiffon assert their status as favorites to advance to the final draw of the Andalusian tournament. The last one to get his qualification was the local Carlos Gómez-Herrera who defeated his compatriot Nicolás Álvarez Varón in a day where the remaining six places that complete the ATP Challenger 125 were decided.
Tuesday 29th will mark the return to competition of two great champions, the tournament's number 1 top seed and 2020 US Open Champion, Dominic Thiem, and the three-times Grand Slam champion and former world number 3, Stan Wawrinka. Two tennis players who have chosen the AnyTech365 Andalucía Open 2022 for their comeback to the courts after overcoming various injuries that have kept them away.
The Swiss, who also celebrated his 37th birthday on Andalusian soil, will face Sweden's Elias Ymer in the second turn of Manolo Santana Court, while the Austrian will face Argentina's Pedro Cachin (not before 1:30 pm).
The Manolo Santana court will also see the debut of Pablo Andujar (3) against Andrea Pellegrino, while in the women's draw the matches between Ana Bogdan-Donna Vekic and Clara Burel-Andrea Lazaro García stand out. Other important matches of the day will Sara Errani vs. Arantxa Rus (4), Kristina Mladenovic vs. Martina Trevisan (7), Roberto Carballes Baena (5) vs. Nikola Milojevic and Jaume Munar (6) vs. Alexander Shevchenko.
